Greetings Agur, What happened is the man we sold 65% of the company to (in Salt Lake City, UT) didn't 'mind the store' and didn't pay his debt. He breached a written legal promissory note with me for $30,000.00 (plus now accruing 2 years of interest). He took my 35% of the company, my 35% of the ownership in everything there and absconded! DO NOT buy ANYTHING from this man, as it may possibly be against the law! Our attorney (Mr. Steven B. Smith) in SLC, UT is on the case! This time, we're not going to let the bad folks get away with it! Just for the record, when Bookbinders Workshop sold the business to this man we accepted THEIR dollar offer, and to kind, and give him some immediate business, we immediately did the following;;

- BBWS gave the man a $30,000 contract to make brass parts, which was 6 MONTHS late in delivery!

- BBWS gave him a standing order for 40 (Yes, 40!) decorative brass bookbinding rolls.

- BBWS gave him 6 MONTHS FREE RENT AT THE 341-2 PIERPONT AVENUE address.

- BBWS gave him $2,500 worth of solid cherry wood blinds, new from Home Depot just a year old!

- BBWS gave him chandeliers, lighted ceiling fans, gold-leafed windows, and MUCH more!

- BBWS held to EVERY LETTER of the agreement with this man, and HE STILL STOLE FROM US!

- BBWS had distributors ready for his tools in Germany, France, England, Canada, South America, Asia.

...AND HE STILL DD THIS TO US! QUITE UNGRATEFUL, THIS CHAP HAS BEEN.

Wish I had better news.

I am a book binder in Columbus, OH as well! I am looking for a teacher in fine binding and most importantly, book repair, restoration, and conservation. I would love to speak with John T or any other conservationist or historical-type binder.
Michael:

I enjoyed reading about your bookbinding achievements, please keep the information coming; I am a letterpress printer with an interest in casting type on my Monotype Supercaster. Recently I purchased a Hoole hand-held bookbinding embossing tool, well it surprised me, it appeared to be 'sand-cast' instead of what I figured would be logically pantograph cut or stamped with a steel die. Quite interesting.

I wonder if you would dedicate a blog entry to more information on this company, what was left over, what were the processes, historical documentation, etc.

Is there a historical 'lineage' that you are aware of, as some tools I understand are marked "Snieder & Hoole" Cincinnati, Ohio.

Thank you in advance,

Dan
Ontario, Canada

What a joy it is just to view some of your bindings. I am so glad you are continuing in this work. I continue to dabble, now on a hobbyist basis. Seeing your work makes me want to get back out in the shop. My only regret is that Walnut Creek was closer to me. I do get to NYC about once a year. Maybe we can catch up in the near future.
John - Columbus, Ohio
